WiMLDS
Sometimes you try so hard and still things don’t fall in place. You do everything you can and still can’t figure out where you went wrong. In times like these all you need is a guiding hand. This is exactly what the WiMLDS Mentorship Programme is providing us.
WiMLDS’s mission is to support and promote women practicing, studying or interested in the fields of machine learning and data science. They create opportunities for women to engage in technical and professional conversations in a positive, supportive environment by hosting talks by prominent data scientists, technical workshops, networking events and hack-a-thons.
The Mentorship Programme
I still remember that day, it was 4 minutes to midnight and my friend called me and said “quick fill up this form, it is exactly what we were looking for.” I filled the form in a rush as it was to close at midnight. I was thankful to her then, I am thankful to her now. This is a great opportunity for us. I was so happy the day I got the acceptance mail from WiMLDS.
Our Mentor
The next mail from WiMLDS introduced my mentor to me. Ms. Jap Leen Kaur Jolly! She is a senior in my university pursuing computer science engineering. In our first meet she told us all about her journey. What all courses she enrolled in, the different projects she made and the hackathons she took part in. It was truly inspiring, listening to her journey. How she bagged the Google Udacity Scholarship, the Facebook F-8 Scholarship, the Google Step Internship and the Google SWE internship.
First meet
Our first meet mainly focused on getting to know each other, discussing our goals and a brief idea about the programme. Our mentor told us about the importance of projects, dsa, hackathons and communities. She helped us through important topics for the WTM scholarship test and interview questions regarding third year internships. We were briefed about what topics to focus on and what resources to refer to for the same.
At the end we were given the task to write this blog and explore more about the areas of our interest. During the week,I focused on improving my python skills.I even explored the different possibilities in Machine Learning and App Development. I checked out different courses that I will be taking up in the upcoming weeks. It was a great experience and I look forward to our next meet.
